Artist Statement: These are the images that Lizzy and I chose for the Montage Diptych project, themed with Reality vs. Fantasy. For the theme and the comparison nature of the diptych, we have a
"reality" side of adult, business life and a "fantasy" side of imaginative childhood. We found images of everday scenes and objects; responsible, businessy adult stuff; and some fun, childish fantasy things mostly involving games, toys, pop culture and the like.
To show the differences, we arranged the pictures into different silhouettes for each side: a guy with a briefcase for the Reality side and a dragon on the Fantasy side. The adult business related images were to be more prominent on the reality side and the fantastical images on the fantasy side. This seperation is kind of why Liz and I both did our own versions of both sides and chose one of each.
We also had a word theme for the text requirement, that word being "DREAM." on the adult side, it's the American Dream of having a steady career, house and family and on the child side it is the dreaming up Fun with your imagination.
You both did a great job on conveying the theme you chose to do. The idea of childhood and adulthood are clearly contrasted between the two images. I absolutely love the choice to make the background's opacity low and the idea to create an image from other images. It really makes your subject pop. The motion in your diptych is great as well. One thing I would have liked to see is in the fantasy side, make the composition like the reality side where part of the subject is off the image (the briefcase credit card). It makes it easier on the eye to have a part of the subject missing and holds a certain mystery about it.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy the fact that you and your partner did 4 different montages altogether and chose the two that you thought were best. I like your final decisions, and there is a definite contrasting element between the reality vs. fantasy side. The background colors on each really allow the images to stand out. Both of you were very creative in the way your presented your montages.
